Eco-Architecture
A bus stop that grows its own foliage as shade? A children's playground, made entirely from trees? A shelter made from living tree roots that could provide natural protection against earthquakes in California?
"Eco-architecture" may sound like a Buck Rogers vision of an ecologically-sustainable future, but that future is now thanks to the guidance of Tel Aviv University Professors Yoav Waisel and Amram Eshel. The concept of shaping living trees into useful objects -- known as tree shaping, arborsculpture, living art or pooktre –– isn't new. But scientists are now ready to use this concept as the foundation of a new company that will roll out these structures worldwide.
Pilot projects now underway in the United States, Australia and Israel include park benches for hospitals, playground structures, streetlamps and gates. "The approach is a new application of the well-known botanical phenomenon of aerial root development," says Prof. Eshel. "Instead of using plant branches, this patented approach takes malleable roots and shapes them into useful objects for indoors and out."
A Scientific and Commercial Partnership
The original "root-breaking" research was conducted at the Sarah Racine Root Research Laboratory at Tel Aviv University, the first and largest aeroponics lab in the world. Founded by Prof. Waisel 20 years ago, the lab enables scientists to conduct future-forward and creative research that benefits mankind and the environment.
Commercial applications of the research are being developed by Plantware, a company founded in 2002. TAU and Plantware researchers working together found that certain species of trees grown aeroponically (in air instead of soil and water) do not harden. This developed into a new method for growing "soft roots," which could easily turn living trees into useful structures.
Completing the informal collaboration between Plantware founders and the university, the company's director of operations, Yaniv Naftaly, holds a degree in life sciences from TAU.
An Eco-Positive Abode
It's even possible that, in the near future, entire homes will be constructed with the eco-friendly technology. An engineer by trade, Plantware's CEO Gordon Glazer hopes the first home prototype will be ready in about a decade. While the method of "growing your own home" can take years, the result is long lasting and desirable especially in the emerging field of green architecture.
Prof. Eshel's team is also working on a number of other projects to save the planet's resources. They are currently investigating a latex-producing shrub, Euphoria tirucalii, which can be grown easily in the desert, as a source for biofuel; they are also genetically engineering plant roots to ensure "more crop per drop," an innovative approach to irrigation.

The Inversion House is located on Montrose Boulevard in Houston Texas. A pair of artists, Dan Havel and Dean Ruck was responsible for this house installation. The two wooden buildings were to be replaced by a new built project so the few months before the demolition, they made this into an architectonic installation.
This mile-high tennis match looks like some cheesy special effect from a Nike commercial. But no, it’s just Dubai. This tennis match between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer happened on a helipad located on top of the Burj Al Arab skyscraper.
It looks like a city about to get drained out of a giant’s bath tub, but it’s actually a picture of the world’s largest diamond mine outside of Mirny, Russia. This mine is so large that air currents prevent helicopters from flying over it.

10 Fun Ways to Say I Love You
Valentine's Day Gift Crafts
- Coupon book: An oldy but a goody. Who can say how long the coupon book has been around, but it needs an upgrade. Gone are the days of the “take out the trash” coupon or “do the dishes” coupon. Now it’s time for “a back rub after a long day’s work” or “win the next disagreement.” No matter how nice or naughty the coupons they are sure to be greatly appreciated.
- Love letters/poem: Send a love letter or poem from a famous author every day starting February 1, then on Valentine’s Day present an original love letter or poem. Use nice stationary and after Valentine’s Day get the pages bound together so it can be a keepsake.
- Go somewhere fun like an ice skating rink or a great museum and then at the end of the night give a gift to commemorate the event. The gift can be something made or bought from a gift shop.
- Make a scrapbook page with pictures of a special event or fun day from the past and frame it.
Valentine's Day Gifts that Last All Day
- Cater to you: Set up the whole day to cater to the other person. TiVo or DVR their favorite shows, cook their favorite meals, run a bath and give them a massage. Be sure they don’t lift a finger for their special day.
- Spa day: Buy bath salts, or milk bath, candles, massage oil, pedicure products, etc., from the drug store and set up a spa at home. Invite the lucky lady or guy over and pamper them.
Valentine's Day Gifts for Couples to Enjoy Together
- Make chocolate candy together: An occasional chocolate has everything needed to make delectable chocolates similar to those found in stores at home for less. After the candy is made enjoy it together.
- Take a couple’s cooking class: Local community colleges, culinary schools, and even some grocery stores have cooking classes. FYI, these classes fill up fast.
- Give a nice bottle of alcohol and enjoy it that night over a great meal.
- Weekend get-a-way to a bed and breakfast: Plan a “get-a-way” to a bed and breakfast. Bed and breakfasts offer a different experience than a hotel room and aren’t very far away. Many times they offer home cooked or gourmet meals and are located in areas where there are lots of things to do.
Having a Happy Valentine's Day
Whether the relationship is new or has been gong strong for a while everyone wants to feel especially loved on February 14. Going beyond flowers and candy and using a little creativity can be very rewarding. Whatever the gift, the most important thing is that it comes from the heart.
